Sathiya’s Story: A Journey of Compassion and Care

Sathiya, a mother of three from a small village, discovered a lump in her breast in 2023 but delayed seeking medical help. Over time, the condition worsened, causing severe pain and eventually leading to a diagnosis of advanced breast cancer.

Frightened by the diagnosis, Sathiya initially refused treatment and withdrew from her family. When the Soul Palliative Care team learned about her situation, they stepped in with compassionate support. Led by Preetha Magesh and supported by nurses Devi and Subadra, the team provided wound care, emotional counselling, essential food supplies, and financial assistance. They also helped her access treatment at Royapeta Government Hospital.

Through regular visits and pain management, including morphine medication, Sathiya experienced comfort, dignity, and meaningful time with her family during her final months. Although treatment was unsuccessful, she passed away peacefully, grateful for the care and understanding she received.

Sathiya’s story highlights the importance of early cancer detection, open communication, and compassionate palliative care. Her journey reminds us that no one should face serious illness alone.

Manikandan’s Story

Manikandan was just 12 years old when cancer changed the course of his young life. Despite the pain and weakness caused by his illness, he continued to share stories of playing on the beach and expressed concern for his parents and younger brother.

During a visit, he spoke about a simple wish—to enjoy a chocolate bar. Seeing his joy while eating it was a precious moment. Soon after, he shared another wish: to see the ocean one last time, the place where he had spent some of his happiest days.

Plans were made to take him there, but before they could be fulfilled, Manikandan passed away peacefully.

Though his life was far too short, his courage, kindness, and unforgettable smile left a lasting impact on everyone who cared for him. His story reminds us of the importance of compassion, listening deeply, and cherishing the moments we have with those we love.

Nirosha’s Story: A Mother’s Hope, A Daughter’s Strength

Nirosha, a 24-year-old young woman from Madampakkam, has lived with seizures and mental health challenges since birth. Her condition becomes especially difficult during the rainy season, bringing frequent seizures, sleepless nights, anxiety, and a constant need for care.

For her mother, caring for Nirosha has been a lifelong journey filled with love, worry, and resilience. As the years passed, the physical and emotional demands of caregiving became increasingly difficult, leaving her concerned about her daughter’s future.

In November 2024, Soul Palliative Care entered their lives and brought much-needed support. Through monthly food kits, diapers, clothing, and ongoing care, the team helped ease the family’s daily struggles and provided comfort during some of their most challenging times.

More than the practical assistance, it was the compassion, dignity, and respect shown to Nirosha and her mother that made a lasting difference. For the first time in many years, they felt supported and understood.

Nirosha’s story is a reminder that compassionate care can bring hope, comfort, and strength to families facing lifelong challenges.

My Story – Mathiazhagan

My name is Mathiazhagan. I am 30 years old and I live in Kamaraj Nagar, Perungalathur. Three years ago, my life changed completely because of a severe illness. Since then, I have been bedridden and living with quadriplegia. I am unable to move my arms or legs. I cannot sit up, stand, or even turn by myself. Every day, I depend entirely on others for my basic needs. This condition has taken away my independence. Simple things that most people do without thinking—like sitting, moving, or taking care of themselves—are impossible for me. Being confined to a bed for years is not just physically painful, but emotionally very difficult. There are days when the loneliness and helplessness feel overwhelming.Because of my health condition, I require continuous palliative care. To live with some comfort and dignity, I need regular support such as food kits, diapers, underpads, catheter kits, and hygiene supplies every month. These are not optional for me—they are essential for my survival and to prevent further health complications.

I am unable to work, and I have no source of income. I am living my life only through the kindness of good-hearted people. In this difficult journey, Soul Palliative Care has been a great support to me. Their care and assistance have helped me face each day with less pain and more hope.Soul Palliative Care has not only supported my physical needs, but they have also given me emotional strength. Knowing that someone cares and stands by me during my most vulnerable moments gives me the courage to continue.

I am deeply grateful to Soul Palliative Care and to all the donors who support them. Because of your compassion, I am able to live with dignity despite my condition. Your kindness gives meaning to my life and reminds me that I am not alone.
